On Thursday, November 21, 2024, we held the second online information sharing session for MATSURI partners to provide useful information on the latest trends in "Bio x Environment x Business," with the theme "What to communicate in an era of criticism of greenwashing."
In the first half, CHITOSE Group Manager Risa Sakamoto, also known as Sally from "Honest MATSURI," introduced the current situation in which scrutiny is being strengthened against "greenwashing," which makes false or misleading claims about the impact on the environment and climate, and introduced examples of companies communicating about the environment and criticizing greenwashing. Furthermore, while honestly communicating what MATSURI has not achieved or is impossible to achieve, we emphasized that we are working to realize social value in the future, and reiterated to our partners that there is no need to be too afraid of criticism of greenwashing, and that they can be confident.
In the second half, energy analyst Noriaki Ooba and Junpei Nomura, General Manager and Secretary General of the Japan Microalgae Technology Association, joined the session to discuss issues surrounding greenwashing. While MATSURI is a valuable initiative that will contribute to the shift away from fossil fuels and towards a sustainable society, we also honestly communicated the areas that have yet to be achieved, and confirmed the importance of having an aggressive communication stance.
In a survey conducted after the event, participants commented that they had gained a deeper understanding of greenwashing and the importance of disseminating information, and they also commented positively that MATSURI is promoting the project "honestly" and that they wanted to be proud of their business.
