On April 4th, the Chitose Group held an opening ceremony for the world's largest (*1) 5ha algae production facility "CHITOSE Carbon Capture Central (hereinafter referred to as C4)", which was constructed in Sarawak, Malaysia. rice field. The opening ceremony was held with a large number of guests, including dignitaries from the Japanese government, Sarawak government officials from Malaysia, and companies and financial institutions participating in MATSURI.
C4 was constructed by Chitose Laboratory, the core company of the Chitose Group, as a commissioned project (*2) from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
The Chitose Group is working on the development of bio-products and the expansion of algae production in order to popularize algae products that support people's lives in society in the project "MATSURI" to build a new algae-based industry to replace the petroleum industry. At the same time, we are working on increasing the scale. As for scale expansion, there is a plan to expand to 2000ha as a current goal, and we are currently raising funds for this plan.
The scale of the production facility completed this time is 5ha, but since it was adopted as a project with a total scale of 50 billion yen by NEDO's Green Innovation Fund (*3), the next production scale will be 100ha for economic rationality and environmental sustainability. We have decided to develop algae production technology that takes into account both the nature of algae and the development of a wide range of applications such as chemical products, cosmetics, fuels, feeds, and foods that use algae biomass, which is produced directly from CO₂ as a raw material.
