Igarashi Paper
100 Crafts Challenges Vol.1 [Possibility of Crafts x Dyeing] "Senja-fuda" was created from the encounter between traditional Japanese paper crafts and algae.
When you think of "Algae," all you can imagine is the slimy stuff that sticks to swamps and aquariums. We think it is even more difficult to imagine that many things can actually be made from algae. That is why we would like to gradually increase the number of things made from algae in our daily lives. In the Echizen Washi villages, where the tradition of Washi has continued for 1,500 years, paper is made from a variety of plants under the theme of "everyday life with Washi, healing Washi. This collaboration between algae and Echizen Washi was realized because we thought that by transforming the algae and Echizen Washi into a traditional product called Senja-fuda, and providing it to the public algae would become a part of people's everyday lives.
In order for sustainable "Algae" to become something that people will love and take for granted in their daily lives for a long time, wouldn't it be a good idea to learn from traditional crafts that have been around and loved for a long time?
Then how about Japanese paper? Actually, when Chitose celebrated its 10th anniversary, we had washi paper made with algae and folded origami cranes. The Echizen Washi wholesaler who helped us at that time should be willing to consult with us.
Washi products! That's a great idea! But what can you do with algae washi?
I'm going to become Japanese paper...? I'm a little scared...
Washi is made from natural plants, so it goes well with anything found in nature. It strangely doesn't go well with scientific fibers or petroleum products... In that sense, it is a perfect match for KURAMI-chan. The washi for our 10th anniversary was also very beautifully done.
It makes beautiful Japanese paper... (sparkles)
He is an inheritor of the traditional Echizen washi that has been used for 1,500 years, but he is also a wonderful person who has produced new washi products one after another and never forgets to take on the challenge of adding to the cutting edge of history through trial and error, such as by renovating a warehouse built in 1917 to serve as a showroom.
This time, since it's the first of a hundred, why not make a product with a big impact?
Washi-ya san, what do you think about Senja-fuda, or Senja-fuda cards? Senja-fuda, to put it simply, seems to have originated from graffiti in the olden days. In other words, they are graffiti. It is not something that is used, but I thought it would be a great way to dye the space with tradition and algae.
Senja-fuda are often found in shrines, such as in the handbasins, right?
That's right. Let's stick it on! If the back is like a sticker, anyone can stick it anywhere! That's exactly what you said, Chris, you could easily dye the space.
Then I'll prepare a very elaborate and stylish design to put inside!
No... I dare you to follow tradition and keep it simple!
Yes, that's right. It's better that way because it's a manual process. Besides, the simpler it is, the more beautiful the texture of the paper and the foil stamping will be.
I'm going to become a beautiful traditional Japanese paper, a Senja-fuda, and dye the space! I'm off!
